Chinese firm wins highway tender

Chinese contractor Jiangxi Zhongmei Engineering Construction has won the bidding of a US$170 million road upgrade project.

According to the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Commerce, this is the first time for Jiangxi Zhongmei to obtain a construction project of more than US$100 million.

The construction work involves the revamping of the Marsabit-Turbi A2 Highway with a length of 121 km, and is part of the Mengbasa-Nairobi-Addis Ababa highway project.

Sources say that this is the second major road engineering project obtained by Jiangxi Zhongmei locally following the one of US$60 million the firm won in April this year.

Chinese contractors have been targeting the Kenyan market and competing for tenders on the country for some time.
