The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has invited bids for construction of berth 19 and a side by side stacking yard to enhance operations at the Mombasa port.
Bidders will be required to provide bid bond of Sh40 million ($500,000).
“There shall be an organized site visit on 13 September 2010 starting from 0930 hrs,” said an advertisement.
According to the port’s managing director Mr Gichiri Ndua, the extension of container berths will enable the port to handle three container vessels simultaneously.
Recently, ships have experienced delays in getting container berths due to the longer vessels currently in manufacture. This, say maritime experts, may lead to loss of transit cargo business to other regional ports such as Dar es Salaam and South Africa.
Mombasa port has in the recent years witnessed growth in the volume of container traffic than was anticipated. The port handled a total throughput of 19.06 million tonnes of cargo up from 16.415 million tonnes handled in the year 2008 – despite the global economic recession. Source: Daily Nation
Update (June 16, 2011) – Mombasa port expansion to begin this month.
