Deaths in another Nairobi building collapse

Police search at the site of a collapsed building in downtown Nairobi on Jan. 23, 2006

At least two people were killed and scores of others injured after a six-storey building under construction collapsed in Embakasi, the Red Cross said.

Scores of others remained trapped in the rubble hours after the incident, which occurred at about 0930GMT.

“The victims were pulled out of the rubble dead. Witnesses say there were many workers at the site when the building collapsed,” Red Cross Communications Manager Nelly Muluka told Capital News.

She said a search and rescue team from the Kenya Red Cross was busy trying to reach other survivors trapped under the debris.

The collapse of buildings that are under construction has become common in the recent past in Kenya.

Previous cases have been attributed to the use of substandard materials, poor workmanship and complicity by corrupt officials from council officials.
