The much awaited Tatu City project on the suburbs of Nairobi is set to begin following the signing of a sh262 million contract between the developer and two construction companies.

The developer, Tatu City Ltd., on Wednesday signed agreements with Gibb Africa and SS Mehta which were contracted to develop Phase 1AA.

Gibb has been tasked with the detailed design and supervision of the enabling works contract as well as the detailed design for the main works (including roads and services articulation), while SS Mehta will undertake the enabling works contract – the bulk earthworks for the road corridors.

According to the Tatu City’s CEO Arnold Meyer, the two firms were awarded the tenders after a stringent tendering process.

“The competing firms were assessed in terms of finance and technical capability and the contract was awarded (in December last year), “ Mr Meyer told guests who attended the signing ceremony.

The contract period for enabling works began April 17 and is scheduled for completion in October this year.

Located 15 km north-east of Nairobi, on a 2,500-acre parcel of land behind Kenyatta University, the US$2.5 billion project involves construction of a mix-use city of 62,000 residents who will live in a well planned environment of homes, shopping malls, office buildings and industrial parks.

“Beside the residential area, phase 1 (sitting on 168-acre parcel of land) will include office blocks, shopping malls, and hotels. It will also include construction of roads, water sewerage, electricity and probably piped gas,” Mr Meyer said in an earlier interview.

The project is 50 per cent owned by Renaissance Partners of Russia with the remaining shares being held by several local and foreign investors.

The 11 phases of the project will be completed in 8-11 years depending on the demand.
