Construction is underway on Green Isinya City, a Sh22.7 billion housing project in Kajiado County, as the developer Cretum Properties seeks to meet the growing demand for low cost housing in the country.

The 1,000-acre project, which is a joint venture between Cretum Properties Limited and a group of saccos, will consist of 5,000 houses, office blocks, schools, eateries and a police station.

Green Isinya City will be located six kilometres from Isinya town and will be accessed through the Nairobi-Arusha highway.

It will include access roads within the estate, street lighting, sewerage system, a recreation centre, children’s playgrounds, a football pitch, perimeter wall with electric fence and surveillance cameras.

“Our intent is to provide good quality housing at affordable rates to our sacco members. We are about 25 saccos working with Cretum Properties to ensure this project is a success,” said Mr Anthony Wambura, the CEO of Crescent Takaful Sacco.

Cretum is undertaking the project in partnership with Crescent Takaful Sacco, Choice Microfinance Bank, Utabibu Investment Cooperative Society, Tarda Housing Cooperative Society Limited, Savannah Cement Sacco, Yes Airtel Sacco among others.

Each sacco will be allowed to own a maximum of 140 plots. Sacco members will then contribute towards developing houses.

“We don’t want to lock out small saccos which may want to acquire some plots based on their capability,” said Mburu Mungai chairman Cretum Properties.

The escalation of land prices in Nairobi is pushing developers out of the Kenyan capital, leading to a surge in gated estates tens of kilometres away from the city.

As a result, there has been an upsurge in construction of new homes in Kiambu, Kajiado, Thika and other smaller towns that now look attractive following improvements to road networks.
