A ground-breaking ceremony has been held for a Sh40 billion golf and wildlife resort near Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu County.

Dubbed Sergoit Golf and Wildlife Resort, the development which is set on 3,100 acres about 15km north east of Eldoret town involves the construction of 2000 luxury villas, three golf courses, a shopping mall, a five-star hotel, a private hospital and an airstrip.

According to the Chairman of Sergoit Holdings Ltd., Joshua Chepkwony, the development will blend sports, recreational and tourism features – making it the first of its kind in the country.

“Sergoit Golf and Wildlife Resort will be the first sports city to be set up in Kenya since independence. It will be a major boost to tourism in the Western Kenya circuit,” Mr Chepkwony said during the ground-breaking ceremony held on Friday.

The resort will be built in four phases with each phase expected to take a year to complete. This means the final phase, which will involve the construction of retirement homes, will be completed by end of 2016.

Phase one will involve the construction of 626 villas on 400 acres near the Sergoit Hill, the defining feature of the Sergoit Golf and Wildlife Resort comprising a tree covered rocky outcrop dominating the flat landscape.

An airstrip alongside an 18-hole golf course and a golf estate with luxury villas on varying plot sizes will be built in the second phase, while a five-star hotel will be built in the third phase of the project.

Each of the four phases is expected to cost about Sh10 billion.

“The development is a hybrid of several ideas borrowed from Thika Greens, Tatu City and Migaa Golf Estate in Kiambu,” said Mr Chepkwony.

Sergoit Golf and Wildlife Resort is expected to foster growth and create jobs for the local community while encouraging eco-tourism and sport tourism.
