Cement prices in Kenya have risen significantly over the past six months due to new taxes introduced by the Finance Act 2023.

A 50kg bag of cement in Nairobi is selling at an average of Sh700, up from as low as Sh600 earlier this year. This price increase reverses a drop observed in the second half of last year.

Cement prices soared in April 2022 due to a global surge in the cost of coal, a key raw material for cement production. The increased costs of electricity and diesel further compelled local manufacturers to raise prices to offset production expenses.

Although the price escalation eased as manufacturers improved clinker availability and raised production, the introduction of new taxes has once again pushed up commodity prices, leading to increased building costs in the country.
