Madrid-based Centunion Company has won a Sh3.2 billion contract to design and build an interchange at the junction of Ngong Road and Naivasha Road, a project that seeks to ease traffic congestion at the busy intersection.

The company, which recently built the T-Mall flyover on Lang’ata Road is expected to commence the project in June once the designs are completed and approved.

The new interchange is expected to open by end of the year.

Centunion Company, which has also erected five footbridges on Raila Odinga Way and Lang’ata Road, has been praised by State officials over its ‘excellent work’.

“I have seen the excellent work Centunion Company has done to improve T-Mall Junction and the construction of five footbridges along Mbagathi [Raila Odinga] Way and Lang’ata Road. I look forward to the commencement of the project,” Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said last week.

The project will be funded through a bilateral deal between Kenya and Spain in the form of a 35-year loan with a 20-year grace period and 0.01% interest rate.

“A concessionary loan at 0.01% interest rate for a repayment period of 35 years is a plus for our country especially now that we have budgetary constraints,” Mr Murkomen added.

Dual carriageway

The new interchange is expected to ease traffic congestion on Ngong Road, which been upgraded into a dual carriageway to support the rising number of motorists.

Ngong Road has since 2016 undergone three phases of expansion, partially (phase one and two) financed through a grant by the government of Japan under its Economic Co-operation Programme Project.

Phase one of the project, covering 2.5km between the Kenya National Library and Prestige Plaza, was undertaken by World Kaihatsu Kogyo Company Limited.

The segment was completed in December 2017 at a cost of Sh1.3 billion.

Great workmanship

A section of Kenyans praised the Japanese contractor for great workmanship.

World Kaihatsu Kogyo Company also executed the second phase of the project, spanning four kilometres from Prestige Plaza to Dagoretti Corner.

That segment was completed in April 2019 at a cost of Sh2 billion.

Phase three of the project, spanning 9.8km from Dagoretti Corner to Karen Shopping Centre, was undertaken Quinjian International Group (K) Limited.

It was financed by the government of Kenya.
