OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle have jointly announced the launch of five new data centre projects across Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, and the Midwest, marking a significant milestone for the Stargate initiative.

With its latest updates, the Stargate initiative is now nearing a planned capacity of seven gigawatts and has crossed $400 billion in potential investments, according to a statement issued on September 23.

First announced earlier this year, the Stargate program is targeting a $500 billion investment to develop a 10-gigawatt network of AI-focused data centres by the end of 2025.

The new figures suggest the project is moving faster than originally expected, highlighting the breakneck speed at which AI-related infrastructure is expanding.

Since January, more than 300 locations have been proposed for inclusion in the program.

Oracle CEO Clay Magouyrk emphasised the urgency of the buildout, saying the company is scaling up its cloud infrastructure at a pace unmatched in the industry.

The announcement also signals substantial opportunities for contractors, particularly in Texas, where multiple facilities are underway.

Among the new sites is a facility in Milam County, Texas, set to provide powered infrastructure for a fast-build data centre in partnership with SB Energy, a SoftBank subsidiary.

Another Texas project in Shackelford County is being developed collaboratively by SoftBank and Oracle. In Lordstown, Ohio, SoftBank and OpenAI have broken ground on an advanced data centre expected to be operational next year.

These efforts complement ongoing US government initiatives to fast-track permitting and boost electricity generation to support AI infrastructure.

The projects will join the flagship Stargate campus in Abilene, Texas, which recently delivered the first Nvidia GB200 racks in June.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasised the importance of infrastructure in AI’s future: “AI can only fulfil its promise if we build the compute power to drive it. We’re already making progress.”
