Caterpillar has unveiled the next-gen mid-size articulated dump trucks, bringing a new engine line-up, redesigned bodies, and automatic safety and operator-assist features.

Starting January 2026, Caterpillar will build updated Cat 725, 730, 730 EJ, and 735 dump trucks at its Peterlee factory, shipping them worldwide.

Caterpillar has made articulated dump trucks at Peterlee since 1985.

All models use the Cat C13 engine (257–316kW/345–424hp) and meet global emissions standards like EU Stage V and US EPA Tier 4 Final.

The company says the new design brings efficiency gains of up to 14% compared with previous versions of the 725.

“Caterpillar’s latest machine design makes operating our next gen articulated trucks feel more comfortable, responsive, and user-friendly than ever,” said Sherrie Williams, global product application specialist at Caterpillar.

“With the introduction of the Cat C13B engine on the 725, the improved power-to-weight ratio means it is up to 14% more efficient on our Tier 4 Final [and equivalent] machines.”

The trucks feature a redesigned interior with touchscreen controls, push-to-start ignition capable of storing up to 50 operator IDs, and an integrated jogdial for navigation.

Optional extras include object detection radar, a multiview camera system and an interactive Operator Coaching tool that delivers cycle data and training feedback directly to the in-cab display.

Caterpillar has also focused on payload and material handling. The 725, 730, and 735 models now have new dump bodies that make loading faster and help prevent leftover material from sticking inside.

The 730 EJ still uses its ejector system, which spreads the load without lifting the bed. This allows easier operation on slopes, soft ground, and in low-clearance areas like tunnels.

Advanced technology plays a central role. Automatic Traction Control prevents wheel slippage without operator input, while updated Automatic Retarder Control works alongside an engine overspeed function to improve braking and handling.

A new Auto Wait Brake automatically engages service brakes when the truck stops, saving fuel and enhancing control during short pauses.

Dynamic Roll Protection, integrated with Caterpillar’s Stability Assist, alerts operators to rollover risks and can automatically slow the machine in high-risk scenarios.

A dump body height limit feature on the 725, 730 and 735 further protects against collisions with overhead structures.

Payload management has been upgraded with improved sensors and external indicator lights to signal when loading approaches rated capacity.

Caterpillar said the updates reflect its focus on efficiency, sustainability and operator safety in demanding jobsite conditions.
