Cat Upgrades 303.5 CR Mini Excavator with New Software
New software enhances the mini excavator’s speed and performance.

Caterpillar has unveiled a software update for its 303.5 CR Cat mini excavator, promising a noticeable boost in responsiveness and on-site productivity.
The upgrade enhances the machine’s transient speed – the time it takes to accelerate from a standstill to full travel – by 25%, according to the company. Improved acceleration leads to faster repositioning and reduces downtime between digging or lifting tasks.
Greg Worley, market professional for Cat mini excavators, recently explained that “the 2025 version has 35% more productivity and 25% more transient speed.”
“When we talk about transient speed, we’re not talking about top speed. We’re talking about how you get from 0 to 60,” he clarified.

The update, available through Cat dealers, can be installed on all next-generation models built between 2021 and 2024. Operators can view their current software version directly on the machine’s monitor.
The 303.5 CR Cat mini excavator is designed for a balance of compact versatility and robust performance. It can lift and carry a standard 2,450-pound street plate, while its compact radius swing enables operators to work in confined spaces without compromising stability.
The optional stick-steer travel mode allows switching from traditional lever controls to joystick operation for both travel and blade movement, offering smoother handling across various job site conditions.
The Next Generation LCD monitor – or an optional touchscreen version – displays key performance data in an accessible format.

Ease of maintenance remains central to Cat’s design philosophy. Ground-level checkpoints and a tilt-up cab speed up servicing, while Auto Idle, Engine Idle Shutdown, and Cruise Control reduce fuel use and emissions.
The machine’s Cat® C1.7 engine meets global emissions standards, including U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V, and runs on ultra-low sulfur diesel or renewable fuel blends.
With the latest update, Caterpillar aims to streamline job site operations while lowering environmental impact – a combination the company says will “help you get the job done faster” and more efficiently than ever.
