Frank Ireri, the man who led Housing Finance—later HF Group—through one of the most transformative periods in Kenya’s banking history, has died after a battle with cancer.

His passing at Nairobi Hospital on 26 October, aged 63, marked the end of a career defined by an unshakable belief that finance should serve the public good.

When Ireri took over as managing director in 2006, Housing Finance was a modest mortgage lender struggling to stay relevant in a rapidly changing market. He recognised early that the institution’s survival depended on diversification.

Under his watch, Housing Finance expanded into retail banking, ventured into corporate bonds, and, in 2014, evolved into HF Group—a holding structure designed to position it as a full-service bank.

Colleagues recall Ireri as a meticulous leader who demanded responsibility in every decision.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Frank Marangu Ireri, a respected member of the Centum Real Estate Board,” Centum Real Estate said in a statement, adding, “His leadership, kindness, and steady presence left an enduring impact on all of us.”

But even bold visions meet headwinds. After 2015, a cooling property market and the interest rate cap cut deeply into HF’s margins.

By 2017, profits had fallen to Sh126 million from Sh905.8 million the previous year. Public debate followed revelations that Ireri had earned Sh64.4 million—about half of the bank’s net profit.

In 2018, Ireri took a leave for medical reasons and formally retired in March 2019 after 13 years in charge of the organisation. Even in retirement, he worked to expand access to housing, leading Habitat for Humanity Kenya and serving on Centum Real Estate’s board.

Beyond HF Group, Ireri built an impressive career across the financial sector. He served on the Flame Tree Group board prior to its Nairobi Securities Exchange listing, worked as Africa Operations Director for Barclays Kenya, and held positions at Deloitte, Citibank, and the Kenya Bankers’ Association.

Frank Ireri is survived by his wife, Angie, and daughters, Lian Waithera and Ella Gathoni.
