Heavy equipment giant JCB is making big progress on its $500 million San Antonio factory, with the project already hitting major construction milestones.

Sitting on 400 acres, the new factory will produce telehandlers and mobile elevating work platforms. It is expected to create around 1,500 jobs.

Since construction began in June 2024, more than a million tons of soil and 119,000 tons of special fill have been moved, and nearly 5,900 meters of sewer, water, and stormwater pipes have been installed.

Vertical construction on the production and office buildings has now begun, led by Texas-based Joeris General Contractors.

RVK, a women-owned firm with experience in commercial and industrial projects, is leading the architectural design, while R&S Excavation did the site grading and Ella Contracting handled the utilities.

David Carver, Operations Director for JCB San Antonio, said: “We’re pretty confident that we’re on plan and ready to start production next year, so we’re excited about building that product for you.”

Hiring for key roles in San Antonio is scheduled to start in late 2025, with a focus on the local community and veterans.

In April, JCB announced an expansion that increased the San Antonio facility to 1 million square feet, a move made in the wake of Trump’s tariffs to strengthen U.S. manufacturing capacity.

Richard Fox-Marrs, the company’s chief executive, said the JCB San Antonio factory expansion reflects confidence in the market and the strategy to bring production closer to customers.

“We are geographically diversifying our manufacturing footprint, giving greater resilience and flexibility across all of our North American operations,” he said.

Fox-Marrs added: “When complete, the site will be the largest JCB facility anywhere in the world.” The facility will include a demonstration area and ranch-style area to enhance the customer experience and has been designed to allow for flexible production of any JCB product.

Carver emphasised the company’s commitment to workforce development. “JCB is deeply committed to the local workforce and creating meaningful career pathways. Through education partnerships and a focus on veterans, we’re building a team that reflects our values and the community we’re joining,” he said.

The San Antonio facility is a major step for JCB, combining rapid construction with strategic planning to meet North American demand. When production begins next year, it will represent the culmination of the company’s largest investment in 80 years.
