Volvo Construction Equipment has expanded its next-generation excavator range with the 35-ton ECR355, a short tailswing model for tight spaces—its biggest redesign in two decades.

Powered by a 253-horsepower diesel engine, the excavator has a tailswing radius of 6 feet 8 inches that allows it to work in tight spaces with powerful digging and lifting.

The setup uses smart cooling, engine speed regulation and electronic sensors to deliver “smooth and precise control of the boom, arm and bucket movements” and higher torque at lower RPM.

The company also highlights a 7% increase in lift capacity to 26,631 pounds and a 4% rise in tractive force.

Productivity features include Volvo Active Control, which automates boom and bucket functions. According to Volvo CE, this can support “up to 45% faster grading with less rework and fatigue.”

Operators can also use boundary limits, Dig Assist apps for 2D and 3D machine control, new engine work modes, hydraulic priority settings and automatic engine shutdown.

Inside, Volvo has fitted what it calls a full-size conventional cab, claiming it provides “20% more space compared to other short swing models.” Jaesu Kim, Volvo CE global product manager, said comfort had been a priority.

“Operators will also find 50% better in-cab cooling performance, reduced noise levels due to new electric fans and a host of modern conveniences, including Bluetooth connectivity, wireless phone charging, extensive storage solutions and a two-stage filtration system for cleaner air,” he said.

Safety and visibility are supported by the firm’s Smart View system, which uses 360-degree cameras and radar to detect people and obstacles.

Other cab elements include new electric travel pedals, a precision joystick system, an ergonomic switch layout and a tiltable left console to make entering and exiting easier.

Volvo notes that the excavator has extended service intervals, with engine oil changes every 1,000 hours and hydraulic oil changes every 3,000 hours, which it describes as “some of the longest service intervals in the industry.”

The company says grouped service points, ground-level refilling and quick-drain ports will help operators minimise downtime while keeping fleets productive.

Orders for the ECR355 are open in North America, and it will soon be available elsewhere.
