Cat Unveils 308CR Mini Excavator For Tight Worksites

Caterpillar has unveiled its latest mini excavator, the 308CR, replacing the 307.5 with a machine that offers more hydraulic power and efficiency.
The new model joins Cat’s 8-metric-ton lineup and introduces a compact-radius design that significantly reduces rear overhang—by 67% with a 550-pound counterweight and 61% with a 1,100-pound counterweight.
The 308CR is powered by a 69-horsepower Cat C2.8 Turbo engine, the same powerplant used in some of the company’s larger mini excavators.
It features auto idle, auto engine shutdown, and a variable displacement pump for hydraulics. The excavator’s operating weight stands at 18,659 pounds.
With the long-stick setup, the 308CR can dig down to 15 feet 5 inches and reach out 22 feet 8 inches. Lift capacities have also been improved, both over the front with the blade down and over the side.
Greg Worley, market professional at Caterpillar, highlighted the relevance of the 308CR for urban projects. “We’re doing more and more brownfield development,” Worley says.
“Basically, we’re going back to redeveloping or filling in the spaces in urbanized areas; [there’s] less green construction going on nowadays.
“So when you go into these urbanized areas, you need as much power performance and capability in the machine’s smallest package possible.”

The 308CR has wider tracks and a longer undercarriage than the previous model. The cab is closed and pressurised. It has a new monitor, easy-to-use controls, cruise control, improved air conditioning, and a comfy suspension seat. The excavator features a bright seatbelt and an optional reminder system for safety.
Serviceability has been improved with grouped routine check points, ground-level access, a back-up camera, side camera, and work lights.
The 308CR accepts rubber belt tracks, steel tracks, or steel tracks with rubber pads, and uses the same pin sizing as the 307.5 for compatibility with existing work tools.
Advanced technology options include Cat Indicate for visual and audible bucket placement guidance, Cat E-Fence for restricting motion in confined spaces, the Laser Catcher for reference points on site, and Cat Grade 3D for real-time positioning on complex jobs.
Caterpillar’s 308CR mini excavator aims to combine power, precision, and compact design to meet the growing demands of urban redevelopment projects.
