Interior design is a costly venture, but if you are creative enough you can improve your home without breaking the bank.

Here are five interior design ideas to give your living room a professional designer flair.

1.) Lighting

When used properly, lighting can help alter any ordinary room into a visually stimulating room. Experiment and find out what colours will complement your lighting system to give your home the desired look.

2.) Painting

This is the easiest way to give your house the much-needed facelift. Use colours to create the desired mood and atmosphere. Use brighter colours such as orange and yellow if your furniture has a dark colour and vice versa.

This will make the furniture pieces stand out while giving the room a high-end look. Avoid painting your walls white as this can make your house feel cold.

3.) De-clutter

Remove all unnecessary items from your house. Learn to let go of items that fill closets without adding any value to your home.

Display your keepsakes sparingly for maximum exposure. For best results, display items in odd numbers: one item, three items, five items, etc.

4.) Mimic popular designs

Identify and mimic popular design styles. You can get great interior design ideas from homes and gardens magazines, design books and websites – meaning you do not have to re-invent the wheel when it comes to home decor.

5.) Rhythm

Create the illusion of visual stimulation by setting your room in a way that the viewer’s eye keeps moving from one point to the other. This should be done carefully to avoid confusing the viewer by scattering items all over the room.
