Chinese mechanical equipment maker Zhejiang Kaishan Compressor has clinched a multi-billion-shilling engineering, procurement and construction deal for a geothermal power plant in Nakuru, in a move that augments the company’s expansion into the clean energy sector.

According to a report published by Yicai Global on Monday, Kaishan’s subsidiary – Kaishan Renewable Energy Development – has signed the Sh6.5 billion deal with Sosian Menengai Geothermal Power, which is building a 35 megawatt plant in Menengai.

The company has also signed a 14-year operation and maintenance deal worth Sh1.8 billion for the plant. Both partners have agreed to adjust annual costs based on local price indexes.

Sosian Menengai Geothermal Power is putting up the facility in the Mennonay volcanic geothermal block in Nakuru County.

The company has already signed an agreement with Kenya Power for the sale of electricity generated at the plant.

Kaishan Compressor, which has serviced the air compressor industry for the past 40 years says on its website that it is “committed to shifting to the green energy business.”
