US construction companies wield immense influence, orchestrating projects that reshape the skylines of American cities and drive economic growth.

From skyscrapers that redefine cityscapes to roads and rails that enhance connectivity, these companies mold the nation’s physical and economic landscape.

Here is a list of America’s top 10 construction companies.

1. Lennar | Florida

Lennar Corp. is a prominent home building company serving the US housing market. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, the company operates multiple brands, including Lennar Homes, CalAtlantic Homes, and Eagle Home Mortgage.

Lennar Homes designs quality living spaces, while CalAtlantic Homes delivers luxury homes. Through Eagle Home Mortgage, Lennar Corp. offers financing solutions for homebuyers.

The company’s earnings stood at $33.7 billion in 2022.

2. D R Horton | Texas

D.R. Horton, Inc., a home building company based in Arlington, Texas, has been the largest homebuilder in the U.S. by volume since 2002.  

The Delaware-incorporated company operates four brands: D.R. Horton, Emerald Homes, Express Homes, and Freedom Homes.

The Emerald Homes brand provides luxury real estate, while Express Homes caters to entry-level buyers. Freedom Homes caters to the active adult community.

The company reported sales of $33.5 billion in 2022.

3. Bechtel | Virginia

Bechtel Group Inc. is a global construction, and project management company that primarily focuses on civil infrastructure, power, and large telecommunications projects worldwide.

Founded in 1898 by 25-year-old Warren A. Bechtel in San Francisco, the company is now based in Reston, Virginia, and has completed over 25,000 projects spanning 160 countries.

Some of its projects include Hoover Dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River; Tacoma Narrows Bridge, a vast suspension bridge in Washington; and the Channel Tunnel, a 50 km railway tunnel linking the island of Great Britain with the European mainland.

Bechtel Group designs and builds nuclear power plants, roads, airports, pipelines, communication networks, and oil and gas field development projects.

The company reported sales of $17.6 billion in 2022.

4. PulteGroup | Georgia

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, PulteGroup, Inc. is one of the top construction companies for homes in the US, operating in 44 markets in 23 states.

The company, which operates under various brands, including Pulte Homes, Del Webb, Centex, and DiVosta Homes, caters to a diverse range of clients.

Pulte Homes creates innovative living spaces, while Del Webb designs vibrant communities for active adults. Centex focuses on affordable housing, while DiVosta Homes adds some luxury to residential real estate.

PulteGroup has delivered nearly 750,000 homes throughout the US since it was founded in 1950. The company’s earnings stood at $16.2 billion in 2022.

5. Jacobs Engineering | Texas

Based in Dallas, Texas, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. is a global construction company offering a range of services including engineering, design, project management, construction, and technical solutions across diverse industries.

The company operates on an international scale, providing its expertise in regions across the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Middle East.

Some of its notable projects include the renovation of the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, DC., USA; the Crossrail project in London, UK; and the Hanford Site cleanup in Washington state, USA.

The company reported earnings of $14.9 billion in 2022.

6. Fluor Corp. | Texas

Fluor Corp is an American construction company that provides engineering, procurement, construction, maintenance, and project management services.

Based in Irving, Texas, Fluor Corp., a company with over 100 years of history, undertakes projects in the oil and gas, industrial and infrastructure, and power sectors.

Some of its projects include the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway in Phoenix, Arizona, US; Quellaveco Open Pit Copper Mine in Moquegua, Peru; and the Al-Zour Oil Refinery in Kuwait.

The company reported sales of $13.7 billion in 2022.

7. Emcor Group | Connecticut

Emcor Group Inc. a top American construction company that offers a wide range of services including engineering, procurement, construction, and management.

Headquartered in Norwalk, Connecticut, Emcor Group operates primarily in the US but it has also expanded its services to international markets.

8. Kiewit Corp. | Nebraska

Based in Omaha, Nebraska, Kiewit Corp., an employee-owned construction company, was founded as a masonry business in 1884 by Peter Kiewit, a son of Dutch immigrants.

Today, the giant company offers construction and engineering services in building, oil, gas, and chemical; industrial; water and wastewater; and mining sectors.

Some of its projects include historical buildings in Nebraska, such as the Livestock Exchange Building (1926), the Nebraska State Capitol Tower (1927), and Joslyn Art Museum (1928).

Others are Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore Harbor, Safeco Field in Seattle, and the 11.5-mile and 6-station extension of Washington Metro in Washington D.C.

The company reported sales of $10.4 billion in 2022.

9. NVR, Inc. | Virginia

Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, NVR, Inc. is one of the most respected home building companies in the US. Operating under three brands—Ryan Homes, NVHomes, and Heartland Homes—NVR serves a diverse range of clienteles.

Ryan Homes specializes in the provision of affordable housing, while NVHomes, and Heartland Homes provide homes for high-end homebuyers.

NVR, Inc. reported earnings of $10.3 billion in 2022.

10. Toll Brothers | Pennsylvania

Toll Brothers, based in Horsham, Pennsylvania, is a renowned homebuilder that focuses on delivering homes that cater to various segments of the market.

Founded by brothers Robert I. and Bruce E. Toll in 1967, Toll Brothers started in commercial property development before branching out into luxury home construction in 1982.

This shift showcased the company’s adaptability and marked its ascent as a prominent player in the upscale residential market.

Today, Toll Brothers operates under multiple brands, including Toll Brothers, Toll Brothers City Living, and Toll Brothers Apartment Living. 

Toll Brothers reported sales of $10.2 billion in 2022.
