Home to some of the world’s biggest cement companies, the United States of America is the third largest cement producer globally after China and India.

Here is a list of the 10 leading cement companies in the US.

1. Holcim

Established through the merger of Lafarge and Holcim in July 2015, Holcim is the world’s largest cement company with a presence in 90 countries.

The company owns 180 plants globally with an annual production capacity of 386 metric tonnes per year, which makes it the largest cement company in the universe. 

Holcim, whose headquarter is in Switzerland, is also a top producer of aggregate and ready-mix concrete. In the US, the company operates 13 plants with a capacity of 22 metric tons per year.

The company’s 2020 revenues stood at $25.3 billion down from $29.2 billion in 2019.

2. CEMEX

Headquartered in San Pedro, near Monterrey, Mexico, CEMEX is a heavy building materials company specialising in the manufacture of cement, aggregates and ready-made concrete.

The company was founded in 1906 and has a presence in over 50 countries and territories around the world with 64 cement and grinding plants. It has an annual production capacity of 92 million tonnes.

CEMEX reported annual sales of US$13 billion and EBITDA of US$2.5 billion in 2020, cementing its position as one of the top cement companies in the world.

3. CRH America

CRH America, a subsidiary of Ireland-based CRH plc promotes itself as the largest building materials company in North America. It operates across the United States from its Atlanta headquarter.

CRH plc grew quickly between 2015 and 2016 after acquiring assets from Lafarge and Holcim. Today, it has a production capacity of 50 million tons a year across 39 integrated and 15 grinding plants.

CRH reported annual sales of $27.6 billion in 2020.

The company employs 76,600 people at 3,100 locations worldwide.

4. Buzzi Unicem

Buzzi Unicem USA, the American subsidiary of Italian Buzzi Unicem S.p.A, is a leading producer of cement, ready-mix concrete, and construction aggregates.

The company, which is based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was formed in 2004 after the merger of RC Cement (Buzzi Unicem SpA) and Lone Star Industries (Dyckerhoff).

Buzzi Unicem USA owns seven cement plants with a production capacity of 9 million metric tonnes. It is considered one of the biggest cement companies in the US with more than 1,400 employees.

Buzzi Unicem SpA reported sales of $3.83 billion in 2020.

5. Argos USA Corp

Headquartered in Houston, TX, Argos USA is a top producer of cement and ready-mix concrete products. Although its parent company, Argos Cement Co., was founded in 1936 in Colombia,Argos USA Corp started operations in 2005 following the acquisition of Southern Star Concrete and Concrete Express.

The company says it became the fourth largest cement manufacturer in the US in 2011.

Argos has seven cement plants in Colombia and four in the United States with a total installed capacity of 23 million tons of cement per year.

The company is Colombia’s leading producer of concrete and the second-largest producer of the material in the US with a capacity of 16.5 million cubic meters of concrete per year.

6. Ash Grove Cement

Ash Grove Cement, a CRH company, is one of the leading cement companies in the US. The company, which is headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, owns eight cement plants across the United States.

Ash Grove also owns 27 terminals and two deep water import terminals.

In 2018, the company dispatched 8.3 million tons of cement from its plants and network of terminals located all over Texas, Midwest, and Western US.

Since 2019, Ash Grove has been one of the largest cement companies in North America following the addition of operations in Florida, the US Great Lakes and Canada.

7. Eagle Materials

Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Eagle Materials Inc. is a leading manufacturer of building materials serving markets throughout the United States.

Originally part of Centex Corporation, Eagle Materials became a fully independent business through a spin-off deal in January 2004. Today, the company produces cement, gypsum wallboard, recycled paperboard, concrete and aggregates.

Eagle Materials operates cement plants in Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Nevada, and Illinois with a total production capacity of about five million metric tons per year.

8. Lehigh Hanson

Headquartered in Irving, TX, Lehigh Hanson is a subsidiary of Heidelberg Cement – one of the world’s biggest cement companies.

The company, which was founded as a single mill business in 1897, was acquired by Heidelberg in 1977 when the later sort to establish a presence in the United States.

Lehigh Hanson produces a variety of cement, and owns 19 cement plants and more than 70 distribution terminals strategically located across the United States and Canada.

9. CalPortland Company

Headquartered in Glendora, California, CalPortland – which was founded in 1891 – is a top building materials and construction solutions provider to the Western United States and Canada.

The company runs 13 cement factories in the US, which make several types of cement including blended Portland-limestone type IL cement, oil ad well cement glass g, and Portland cement part I to part V.

CalPortland has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for its efforts in plant safety, carbon emission reduction, recycling, and energy conservation.

10. Essroc Cement Corp.

Essroc Cement Corp was one of the leading cement companies in the US for decades until the second half of 2016 when it was acquired by HeidelbergCement.

Founded in 1866 as Coplay Cement, the company commenced production of cement in 1872. The company was acquired by Ciments Francais in 1976. It changed its name to Essroc in 1989.

In 1992, Italcementi SpA acquired the Ciments Francais.

Today, all of the Essroc Cement Corp’s cement operations have been rebranded to Lehigh Cement Company while those of aggregates & RMC have been rebranded to Hanson.
