Kenya’s real estate and digital content communities are in mourning following the sudden death of Mary Diana, the CEO and founder of MD Modern Homes.

The 30-year-old property dealer died in her sleep on June 28, 2025, at her home in Nairobi, following a short illness. She had recently returned from Dubai.

Diana was known as one of Kenya’s most successful young real estate agents. Her sudden death has deeply shocked both the property world and the many people who followed and admired her online.

Born in Kakamega County and a graduate of the Technical University of Kenya with a degree in Mathematics and Applied Statistics, Diana entered the real estate scene as an intern in 2018. Her rise was meteoric. After working her way up from intern to sales manager at a Nairobi-based firm, she launched her own company—MD Modern Homes—in 2022.

In just one year, Diana turned the startup into a respected name, selling properties in key areas such as Nairobi, Kitengela, Juja, Ngong, and Westlands.

Her business relied a lot on social media, especially TikTok and Instagram, where she shared homes for sale, happy client stories, and parts of her day-to-day life.

“She was a pioneer of her generation—a young woman who harnessed the power of social media not just for self-promotion but to build a business that changed lives,” said a colleague from the Kenya Professional Realtor Association, which honoured Diana as Realtor of the Year in 2023.

Diana had also been honoured with the Young Entrepreneurs Achievement Award and was recently celebrated at the Super Women Awards for her strong leadership in business.

Her last Instagram post, taken at the Wings of Mexico statue in Dubai, was a touching message about her life and journey.

“I’ve soared higher than I ever imagined, and the journey is only just beginning,” she captioned a photo of herself standing with outstretched arms—words that now echo with tragic irony.

Tributes have poured in from across Kenya’s digital landscape. Friends, colleagues, and followers described her as “vibrant,” “driven,” and “deeply inspirational.” Many highlighted how she mentored young women looking to break into the business world.

“She always had time to lift someone else up,” said one close friend. “Her ambition was matched only by her generosity.”

At the time of writing, the cause of her death has not been officially confirmed. Friends say she appeared to be in good health and had been enjoying her birthday celebrations prior to her passing.

MD Modern Homes has yet to release an official statement, but several brands associated with Diana have expressed condolences online, calling her “a beacon of possibility” and “a legacy-maker.”

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story stated that Mary Diana died in Dubai. We have since established that she passed away in Nairobi. We regret the error.
