A total of 228 houses valued at Sh684 million will be up for grabs in a fortnight as the State embarks on the maiden allocation of homes under its affordable housing scheme.

This follows the completion of the first phase of the Nairobi’s Park Road project, which will hold a total of 1,370 units upon final completion in October 2020. The project is being undertaken by China State Construction Engineering under a design-build-finance model.

Designed with a plinth area of 60 square metres, each of the two-bedroom houses under phase one of the project will be sold at Sh3 million, which adds up to Sh684 million.

According to the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, a lottery-based allocation of the houses will take place at the end of November after which the new homeowners will begin making monthly payments for their property.

“The process will be done in a regular, fair and transparent system free of any human intervention,” reads a statement on Boma Yangu portal, which facilitates online registrations.

Last week, the government sent text messages to more than 260,000 applicants asking them to update their income and tax details on the portal to facilitate the allocation of the houses.

“This is required for you to be eligible for allocation of housing. Login to bomayangu.go.ke to update your details,” the text message said.

The affordable housing scheme, which seeks to deliver 500,000 houses countrywide in five years, allows Kenyans to register for free on the Boma Yangu platform – giving personal details such as employment status, household particulars and preferred area of residence, which will help the government to identify the best locations to put up the houses.

After registration, an assessment is then undertaken to verify the details provided and upon completion, the potential buyer will then be allocated a unique identification number which they will use to make their contribution to their account in the housing fund.
