From the D8-774 mining dump truck to Komatsu’s D575A-3SD and Liebherr’s LTM11200 mobile crane, here is a detailed list of the 10 largest construction vehicles in the world.

1. Largest Dump Truck: D8-774

The D8-774 Mining Truck, which was announced in May 2018 by Slovenian firm ETF Mining Equipment, is the largest dump truck in the world with a payload capacity of 774 tonnes.

The vehicle has a gross operating weight of 810 tonnes. Its loading height and width stand at 6.3m and 7.6m, respectively. The overall length of the truck ranges from 12.5m to 29.0m.

The D8-774 Mining Truck is full electric powered (no diesel engines) with harvesting of retarding energy. The machine has zero carbon emissions and low noise levels.

2. Largest Bulldozer: Komatsu D575A-3SD

Komatsu D575A-3SD is the largest bulldozer in the world with an operating weight of 152 tonnes, blade capacity of 69 m³ and exerting ground pressure of 159 kilopascal (kPa).

The machine features a ‘Super Dozer’ blade that is 3.6m tall and 7.3m wide, which allows it to move up to 127.5 tonnes of material at one go.

The Komatsu D575A-3SD weighs 114.5 tonnes and is motorised by a 12-cylinder diesel engine which generates about 1,150bhp.

3. Largest Motor Grader: ACCO Grader

Built in 1980 by Italian firm Umberto, ACCO Grader holds the record of the largest grader in the world. It was built for a client in Libya but never left Italy due to trade restrictions.

Weighing 181 tonnes, the 7.3metre-long grader with a 9-metre blade had two engines: the first located at one end generating 1,000bhp and the second at the other end producing 7,00bhp.

The ACCO Grader had a total of 12 tyres. It has since been dismantled for scrap metal.

Editor’s Note: The surviving holder of the title is Caterpillar’s 24H, which was launched in the U.S. in 1996. The Cat 24H is slightly more than 15m long and weighs 62 tonnes.

4. Largest Mobile Crane: Liebherr LTM11200

The LTM11200, which is made by German equipment maker Liebherr, is the world’s largest mobile crane with a lifting capacity of up to 1,200 tonnes.

The machine’s telescopic boom that stretches from 18.3 metres to 100 metres is the longest ever fitted to a mobile hydraulic crane.

The LTM11200 is powered by an 8-cylinder, water-cooled diesel engine that produces up to 500kW and a 602-litre fuel tank. The crane has nine axles and a top speed of 75 km/h.

5. Largest Backhoe: JCB 4CX-15 SUPER

The four-wheel steer 4CX-15 SUPER is not just the largest backhoe in the JCB range; it is also the world’s biggest backhoe.

Powered by JCB EcoMAX 109hp diesel engine, it weighs 8.6 tonnes and can achieve a maximum speed of 41.8 km/h.

The 4CX-15 SUPER’s bucket has a width of 2.35m and it generates 516NM of torque.

Like all JCB backhoes, the 4CX-15 SUPER comes with a 2-year/2,000-hour-bucket-to-bucket transferrable warranty.

6. Largest Excavator: Caterpillar 6090 FS

Caterpillar’s 6090 FS is without a doubt the largest construction excavator.

Weighing 1,000 tonnes, the excavator is based in Bucyrus RH400 – whose manufacturer was acquired by Caterpillar in 2011.

The 6090 FS has a bucket capacity of 18.7 tonnes and it generates 4,500bhp thanks to its two 8-cylinder Cummins QSK60 diesel engines.

Its 52m³ shovel boasts a payload of 93.6 tonnes and it takes a mere four passes to load the biggest Caterpillar dump truck – the Cat 797.

7. Largest Earthmover: P&H L-2350

Manufactured by Komatsu Limited, the P&H L-2350 (formerly L-2350 loader) holds the Guinness World Record for the largest earthmover in the world.

The earthmover, which is mainly used for surface mining, weighs 260 tonnes and has a bucket capacity of 14.3 tonnes.

It is powered by a turbocharged 16-cylinder diesel engine that generates 2,300bhp.

8. Largest Excavating Trencher: Bagger 288

Manufactured by German firm Krupp for the energy and mining company Rheinbraun, the Bagger 288 (Excavator 288) is one of the heaviest land vehicles in the world.

The excavator, which is as heavy as 8,600 cars, is 96m tall (same as the Statue of Liberty) and 225m long – the equivalent of two American soccer fields.

The Bagger 288 has been operational at the Garzweiler open pit lignite mine since 2001. Earlier, it was used to dig coal at the Hambach mine about 20km away.

9. Largest Road Roller: Dynapac CC7200

The Dynapac CC7200 is the world’s largest serial produced tandem roller.

With an operating weight of nearly 17 tonnes, the roller is designed to compact road surfaces with a maximum force of 215kN.

The CC7200 is mainly used for projects that demand highly efficient compaction such as motorways and runways. The roller generates 228bhp and can attain a top speed of 11 km/h.

10. Largest Pull Scraper: K-Tec 1254 ADT

Weighing 22.2 tonnes, the K-Tec 1254 ADT – which also acts as an articulating dump truck – is the largest earthmoving pull scraper in the world.

The 1254 ADT has a heaped capacity of about 40 tonnes and is designed to be pulled with a 40 tonne+, 450-hp+, six-wheel-drive articulated dump truck.
