JCB has partnered with Leica Geosystems to develop a factory-fitted excavator solution that automatically controls the boom and bucket for consistent grade.

Dubbed Intelligrade, the system – which is also known as auto machine control or machine operator automation – automatically controls the boom and bucket position during operation to ensure it consistently hits grade.

The 2D and 3D-ready semi-automated excavator control solutions will be available on the JCB 220X tracked excavator in the UK starting this month.

The system will later be rolled out across the JCB X Series range in more regions.

Leica’s 2D and 3D-ready machine control solutions are available in semi-auto configuration to boost productivity, accuracy, and safety by automating boom, bucket, and tilt rotator control – reducing human error in construction.

According to JCB, the 2D machine control system offers real-time guidance and accuracy, and it is effective for tasks including grading, levelling and trenching.

“However, if you’re taking on more complex work like building embankments, complex slopes or creating multi-level surfaces, 3D machine control gives you all-round automation,” the company says on its website.

JCB says the new system will boost efficiency levels and reduce operating costs.

“In addition, it gives operators greater levels of accuracy when using X Series machines, delivering consistently high standards on construction sites,” says Paul Swallow, business head of excavators at JCB.

The solution also reduces the need for additional surveyors on site, which leads to enhanced levels of safety by mitigating hazards associated with overcrowding.

“Leica Geosystems is a leader in the field of 2D and 3D machine control and by integrating these products at the factory, it ensures they are perfectly set up and available to use from the outset,” Mr Swallow adds.

“Customers can achieve all the benefits of semi-auto machine control without the disruption or complexity of retro-fitting in the field.”

On its part, Leica Geosystems emphasizes its commitment to creating an integration of easy-to-use machine control technology into JCB’s excavators, empowering customers to work more efficiently to achieve optimal results.

“This enables customers to operate with greater efficiency, safety, and achieve the best possible outcomes,” says Tommi Kauppinen, vice president of heavy construction and machine control field solutions at Leica Geosystems.
